In recent years, Jjajangmyeon has gained significant popularity among foreign tourists. Its exposure through various TV programs and YouTube channels has further elevated its appeal. Notably, the global influence of Korean idol groups like BTS has also played a crucial role. When BTS members were seen eating Jjajangmyeon, fans worldwide began to follow suit, contributing to its growing international fanbase.

What is the Jjajangmyeon?

Jjajangmyeon is a popular Korean-Chinese dish known for its rich, savory black bean sauce served over noodles. It's a beloved comfort food in Korea, enjoyed by people of all ages. The Korean version of Jjajangmyeon uses a black bean paste called "chunjang" which is stir-fried with pork, vegetables, and sometimes seafood.

Historical Background

The origin of Korean-style Jjajangmyeon can be traced back to the opening of Jemulpo Port in 1883. When the port opened, many Chinese laborers came to Korea in search of work. At that time, Incheon Chinatown was part of a Chinese concession, leading to the establishment of Chinese restaurants in the area.

Since there was a Japanese concession next to the Qing Dynasty concession, Jjajangmyeon was also sold to the Japanese people. Given that the Japanese ate their food with pickled radish, which is called (danmuji), the practice of serving Jjajangmyeon with yellow pickled radish began.

The differences between Korean style and Chinese Jjajangmyeon

Chinese Jjajangmyeon uses fermented soybean paste called Chunjang, which is more savory and saltier. On the other hand, Korean Jjajangmyeon is made with a black bean paste called chunjang, which is sweeter and less salty compared to its Chinese counterpart. The paste is stir-fried with pork, onion, potato, and sometimes other vegetables, then mixed with water or broth to make a rich sauce.

The first Jjajangmyeon restaurant in Korea is known as Gonghwachun, established in 1908. It was operated by Chinese immigrants and is still located in Chinatown today.

Culture of Jjajangmyeon in Korea.

Jjajangmyeon : A dish for singles.

In Korea, there is a day for eating Jjajangmyeon called Black Day. On this day, single people wear black clothes and eat Jjajangmyeon. Since Valentine's Day and White Day are for couples, Black Day was created for singles. However, it seems to be a bit commercialized now.

A special dish for special days.

In the past, eating out was rare, and was considered a special treat because it was affordable yet different from everyday meals. It became a tradition to eat Jjajangmyeon on important days like graduation or school entrance ceremonies with family and friends.

A convenient meal for moving day.

Moving day is busy with lots of work. It's also a new start in a new home. On such days, people prefer food that is easy to eat and high in energy. Jjajangmyeon is perfect because it is tasty, convenient, and can be delivered easily. It is still a popular choice on moving day even now.
